Aquatic invasive species can cause widespread damage through habitat loss, ecosystem disruption and threats to native species. Due to climate change, aquatic invasive species’ ranges are shifting and expanding as environmental factors evolve and present new, accessible habitat. Charlotte is working on projecting aquatic invasive species’ ranges into the future in Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s) across Nova Scotia. She will be using species distribution models to predict their expansion under two different climate change scenarios. This will allow to determine high risk zones within each MPA and help inform optimum strategies for MPA policy, management and invasive species control.
