Seagrass meadows are highly productive and biodiverse ecosystems that serve a variety of important functions, including the provision of nursery and foraging grounds for fish and invertebrates, carbon sequestration, and nutrient cycling. Although these ecosystems are highly valued, they are experiencing severe decline due to a variety of human induced factors. Hannah’s research contributes to ongoing seagrass restoration projects at Dalhousie University, by evaluating and comparing manual image classification of seagrass against a machine-learning approach, to ultimately determine the most effective approach in terms of effort and accuracy.
